Unless I’m in a tournament, any putt inside a foot is a gimme. That keeps me from having to pluck my Titleist out of cups that appear to be getting deeper.

But as my wife often points out, growing older still beats the alternative.

And despite the various aches and wrinkles, I’ve still aged better than the old Surf Stadium in Atlantic City, formerly known as the Sandcastle.

One month away from its 20th birthday, the once beautiful ballpark has again fallen into a state of disrepair, judging by my recent visit.

The exception is the field itself, which is used by the Atlantic City High School and Atlantic Cape Community College baseball teams. The groundskeepers have done a tremendous job of maintaining the infield and outfield. The grass is lush, and the dirt is smooth.

Otherwise, it’s pretty shabby.

The advertising signs that once covered the fences are gone. Pieces of black tarp were hanging loosely in right field, fluttering against the wind that was whipping off the bay.

The huge, electronic scoreboard in left field no longer works. It was missing panels and is in dire need of a makeover.

The aqua seats are faded. The tiny Surf logos that were on the backs are barely recognizable.

It’s a far cry from the days when the ballpark was the envy of the Atlantic League, which is set to begin its 20th season later this month.

Back then,
ugg lynnea boots Atlantic City's Surf Stadium ballpark showing its age
the Sandcastle was clean and cozy. And it gave fans a spectacular view of the Atlantic City skyline.

The Surf was one of six franchises that formed the league in 1998, along with the Bridgeport Bluefish in Connecticut, Nashua Pride in New Hampshire, Newark Bears, Newburgh Black Diamonds in New York and Somerset Patriots.

Only Bridgeport and Somerset are still in the league.

More than 150 players headed to Plant City, Florida, in early May of that year for an 11 day spring training. Headquarters was a Ramada Inn near the Municipal Stadium Complex, the former spring training home of the Cincinnati Reds. I was in the bar the night 20 year old Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood struck out 20 Houston Astros.

My personal highlights occurred afterward. I had a couple days to myself and decided to spend them in Clearwater/Tampa. A visit to Clearwater meant my first and to date only dip in the Gulf of Mexico.

There were a couple of other “firsts” during a quick jaunt to Tampa.

One of my younger brothers joined me at Tropicana Field the worst place to watch baseball to see a Rays game.

And because Mark twisted my arm until it almost fell off, we checked out the famous Mons Venus gentlemen’s club.

Twenty years later, I’m now the kind of guy who reads “Playboy” for the articles.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still pretty active. My birthday will be celebrated with 59 tire flips in the back parking lot of North Beach Gym. On June 4, I’ll again be among the 1,700 people leaping off the Cape May Lewes Ferry to start the Escape the Cape Triathlon.

ugg boots cardy Atlantic Canadians brace for rate hike impact

cheap childrens ugg boots uk Atlantic Canadians brace for rate hike impact

Atlantic Canadians are going to be hit especially hard by looming hikes in interest rates for mortgages, lines of credit and personal loans, says a Nova Scotia debt relief specialist.

Canadians are probably worse off than Canadians in other parts of the country because we have the same level of consumer debt (excluding mortgages) but we have lower incomes, said debt relief specialist David Moffat, owner of the 4 Pillars office in Nova Scotia.

During the past year, the Bank of Canada has already raised its trendsetting rate three times, hiking it from a historically low 0.5 per cent to 1.25 per cent as of its latest move in January. Canada chartered banks were quick to follow suit, raising their rates by the same amount.

According to Moffat, that already added $750 in annual interest payments for someone taking out a $100,000 mortgage.

But that only the tip of the iceberg. Experts say there are likely a lot more interest rate hikes planned and set to hit Canadians later this year and the next. That means higher interest costs for anyone with a variable rate mortgage, line of credit or personal loan.

Credit card debt, which comes with interest rates of about 19 per cent and higher, usually comes with a more fixed interest rate and so is thought by experts to be less likely to be affected in the short run by increases to the Bank of Canada rate.

Matthew Stewart, director of national forecasting and analysis for the Conference Board of Canada, says the Bank of Canada will likely announce two more rate hikes of 25 basis points each this year and do the same again next year.

That scenario, if correct, would bring the Bank of Canada rate to 2.25 per cent.

consumers pay right now is about 10 per cent (of their after tax income) to service that debt and the interest, said Stewart. the end of 2018, it be 11 per cent. So that a full percentage point That quite significant. good news is most Canadian families will be able to absorb those extra costs because they come at a time when interest rates are just coming off near record lows, said the Conference Board of Canada director of national forecasts.

The bad news is that those Canadians who are already stretched thin financially will find the rising interest rates hard to handle.

now, seven to 10 per cent of households are extremely leveraged. That the people who are in danger of defaulting, said Stewart.

As interest rates rise, more of those Canadians who are carrying a lot of debt will likely be forced into bankruptcy or have to take other measures to stave off creditors.

Jeffrey Schwartz, executive director of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada, isn worried for the average Canadian family that properly managing its finances. Many people, though, will find the interest rate hikes tough.

people who are on the edge or close to the edge who may be adversely affected,
ugg boots cardy Atlantic Canadians brace for rate hike impact
especially if they holding debt instruments with variable rates, he said. could push them towards insolvency. experts agree that many Canadians are not putting enough money aside in savings for unexpected expenses or job losses and borrowing too much.

According to Moffat, the average Canadian owes $1.71 for every dollar of income.

Many Atlantic Canadians might take some comfort in their relatively smaller mortgages compared to other Canadians. But people in this region still carry just about as much of their debt in instruments likely to be affected by the looming interest rate hikes.

According to Statistics Canada figures, 94.3 per cent of the average Canadian debt is tied up in his or her mortgage, line of credit or car loan. On the Rock, the comparable figure is 93.5 per cent. On Prince Edward Island and in Nova Scotia, 90.6 per cent of personal debt is tied up in mortgages, lines of credit and car loans. And New Brunswickers have about 86.6 per cent of their debt in those instruments.

Schwartz advice is simple: if your financial house isn in order, do everything you can to fix it now, before the looming interest rate hikes hit.

Pay off any outstanding balances on high interest credit cards as quickly as possible, he says.

first step is to set up a system where they can put aside an amount of money every month automatically and take it out of their hands. Make it invisible, he said. they can save up to 10 per cent of their paycheques, that would be great. But they may have to build up to that. the experts advice, a growing number of Canadians find themselves in financial hot water and have to file for bankruptcy or put forth a consumer proposal to their creditors every year.

According to the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcies, the total number of insolvencies, consumer proposals and bankruptcies, rose by 1.8 per cent in Canada in January last year compared to the previous month. During the year that ended on Jan. 31, 2017, insolvencies jumped 3.4 per cent compared to the previous year.

But many individual Canadians are hurting financially with consumer insolvencies up 3.7 per cent year over year for the same time periods

The solution to a personal financial crisis, though, isn always a bankruptcy filing or a consumer proposal. In some cases, all that needed is a good debt management program.

Why does Canada need to hoist interest rates?

It a move deliberately designed to take money out of consumers pockets and slow the Canadian economy.

That means slower job growth and less consumer spending.

The rationale behind the Bank of Canada rate hikes is that higher interest rates will slow the rate of growth in the country economy and keep inflation in check at about two per cent, says Matthew Stewart, director of national forecasting with the Conference Board of Canada.

inflation rate is now below two per cent but it is rapidly approaching it, said Stewart in an interview. economists believe it best to keep the inflation rate at two per cent. There a lot more value in the economy being predictable than in the few jobs you might pick up. the Bank of Canada raises its rates, the chartered banks follow suit and variable rate mortgages, lines of credit and personal loans all cost consumers more. That bad news to those who are carrying heavy debt loads,
ugg boots cardy Atlantic Canadians brace for rate hike impact
especially if they lose their jobs or suddenly face unexpected expenses.

But the economic growth and tight labour market that prompted the Bank of Canada to raise its rate also means those Canadians who have jobs can soon expect to see something that been absent for years.

mens uggs slippers Atlantic 10 Tournament championship is up in the air

A lot of excitement is surrounding this week Atlantic 10 Tournament in Brooklyn. 12 teams are meeting at the Barclays Center to battle for the conference title, and I think eight of them have a chance to win it. Here are my predictions for how this will play out:Game 1: Richmond beats Charlotte The Spiders rocked Charlotte in the fourth game of their league season. Since then, Charlotte has dismissed its leading scorer from the team and has struggled. Look for the Spiders to move to the quarterfinals.

Game 2: Butler over Dayton These two actually played a close game in the regular season, but I think the Bulldogs roll in this one reletively easily. The postseason is when the Bulldogs shine, and I look for them to last into the weekend.

Game 3: Xavier over St. Joe This is a game that I expect to go down to the wire. It been a disappointing season for the Hawks, who were A10 preseason favorites. Xavier spent most of the year in the conference top four, and I expect the Musketeers of the early season to show up Thursday.

Game 4 UMass over George Washington: The two times I saw GW in person I was less than impressed, as the Colonials were blown out by VCU and couldn hold a 2nd half lead against Richmond (one of the slower, sloppier games of the year). Sorry, Spider fans, your road ends in the quarterfinals, with hopes of a postseason berth somewhere.

Butler over La Salle I been impressed with La Salle, so this is tough, but I really think we going to see Butler get two wins to move on to Saturday semifinals. Rotnei Clark is due for a big showing.

VCU over Xavier The Rams overcame a 17 point 2nd half deficit to beat the Musketeers in Cincinnati in the regular season. I like their chances in this one. Xavier will come in believing it could win after failing to finish earlier, but VCU will hold them off and move into the semifinals.

Temple over UMass Temple has a great chance to win this entire tournament. The Owls are the hottest team in the conference and have momentum after topping VCU to cap off its regular season. I don think Butler can hang in the conference semifinals, especially in its third game of the day against arguably the best team in the conference. Butler falls, SLU in the title game.

Temple over VCU As Ram fans curse my name while reading this, please take comfort in the fact that this is a tough decision. I love this match up, and I love the way the Rams play. At their best, nobody can beat them. The Billikins have been at the top of the Atlantic 10 since the beginning of the season, but the Owls are peaking at the right time. I pick Temple as the 2013 Atlantic 10 Champions. CLEVELAND, Ohio Bo Burnham is the millennial generation’s answer to Robin Williams and George Carlin. But he’s more than that. He became a YouTube sensation at the age of 15, recording his musical comedy from his parents’ home in Boston.

While he defies categorization, calling him a comedy genius is not an exaggeration.

She gave two examples: “Twelve percent of the planet does not have clean drinking water. [Food Network personality] Guy Fieri has two functioning restaurants.”

Burnham’s stage was loaded with theatrical bells and whistles, including dual smoke cannons. He told the crowd that this show was the largest on the tour.

“In Canada, all the crowd wanted to do was look at the moving lights,” he said.

Burnham said the smoke cannons cost $50 per show, yet they only make his jokes 2 percent funnier.

“I keep saying I’m going to get rid of them tomorrow,” he said. “But I never do. Tomorrow never comes.”

He performed a lament entitled “Straight White Male.” It included the line, “Don’t judge me until you’ve walked a mile in my Uggs.”

Rap music’s misogyny and materialism were a target of a lot of his jokes. He demonstrated how anything could become an epic rap song when set to a “sick beat” by performing “I’m A Little Teapot” to heavy electronic drums and bass.

Burnham, now in his mid 20s, employed audience participation when he had the crowd all crack their knuckles in unison. The sound was unnerving.

Arena country music was another target, for its perceived prejudices. His song “Panderin’ ” included the line “No shoes, no shirt, no Jews.”

He knocked comedian Jerry Seinfeld for his comment about not performing at colleges anymore because audiences were too politically correct.

“Imagine a nation of young people being deprived of the white hot comedy of Jerry Seinfeld,” he said sarcastically.

He performed his hit song, “From the Perspective of God,” which included the lines: “You’re not going to heaven. There’s a million aliens cooler than you.”

Mr. Guthrie and partners Travis Spivey and Brian and Brad Ebersole have been running the sale barn for the last two years, and all worked there before taking over.

The outside sales are pretty much anything goes, but we also sell cattle, pigs, sheep and horses. The livestock is our bread and butter,” he says. It’s been a lot of work, and it takes a lot of work, but we are making a success of it. It’s kind of a family thing. My wife and Travis’ wife both work in the office, and everybody has nephews and cousins moving livestock around.”

The Kewanee Sale Barn is easy enough to find. Go north of Kewanee on Illinois 78 and look for the street sign Sale Barn Road you’ll know you’re close. Follow the road around, stop and park in the field when you see the sea of pickup trucks. You can buy or sell just about anything, including the kitchen sink. I know because I almost bought one there.

Action flies fast, but it’s not too hard to follow. Mr. Spivey calls the first portion of the auction. Follow his fingers and you’ll know who’s in and who’s out, and most of the time he’s standing on whatever it is you’re bidding on. He only stops for the occasional sip of coffee and to let the secretary catch up on the clipboard. Every last Saturday of the month they hold a horse auction.

The miscellaneous stuff goes first, followed by the hay and straw, and the livestock follows. A potato peeler is up next, not just any potato peeler, mind you, it’s The Potato Peeler.” Tires, a slightly used bumper, even an old truck bed minus the truck await.

People say our hay and straw is the best market in Illinois,” Mr. Spivey says. We also do a lot of antiques, tools, vehicles and farm equipment. We have a lot of farm related household items, collectibles, lumber. And don’t forget rabbits and poultry.

We have all been coming here since we were little lads,” he says. I have wanted to do this since I was a little kid,

coming here with my Dad. I am having a lot of fun, a lot of work, but a lot of fun.”

Stacks of logs, chicken feeders (a God awful lot of chicken feeders), albums, a dozen or so lightly read True Romance magazines. A shed’s worth of used tin roof, nicely stacked. A fan that works, an air conditioner that might not. Hogs, cattle and coffee are inside, not together, mind you, but all inside.

Don’t forget our rabbits and poultry,” Mr. Gurthrie says.

It would be hard to forget the rabbits and poultry. There’s a rabbit as big as a lap dog. Chickens, not your Kentucky Fried Chicken type either, weird ones with plumes on their heads and heels and some dappled with feathers that make their heads look the size of softballs.

Peacocks? Got them. Ducks, geese, even a turkey. Mind your bidding on the turkey, though, Mr. Spivey warns. You don’t get to keep the cage the turkey comes in, and, just by the looks of him, I’d say he doesn’t have the makings of a good automobile passenger.

There was one time I sold some emus,” Mr. Gurthrie laughs. That was inside on the sale floor. Sold a pair of them. I can remember when they brought them in, some lady asked me if they were male or female, and I had to tell her I didn’t and couldn’t tell and wasn’t about to find out. During the fourth quarter, AT added 1.3 million connected devices, including 800,000 LTE connections within vehicles, payoff from its entry into smart home technologies.

The quarter also illustrated just how rapidly the wireless industry is changing. AT used promotions to combat offers from rivals T Mobile and Sprint. Customer turnover rose; profits margins fell. And excluding tablets, the carrier lost around 100,000 phone subscribers.

As CMO of AT Mobility, David Christopher is tasked with helping the company adjust to this new landscape for wireless carriers. At his disposal is a big chunk of the nation’s second largest ad budget $3.3 billion in 2013 for all of AT some of which is going toward untested digital platforms like Tumblr and Snapchat. He spoke with Ad Age about the shifting digital world, marketing the Internet of Things and why he doesn’t focus on noisy competitors. The following transcript has been lightly edited for brevity and clarity.

Ad Age: You launched Digital Life [a connected home service] in 2013 and have added connected car partnerships, but have yet to advertise them heavily. How do you market the smart home and connected cars?

David Christopher: We are extremely excited about the ability to connect your home, your car, your wearable and myriad other devices. And we believe that the smartphone is the remote control of your life. It all runs on a network. Customers need a trusted brand to help them navigate these brave new worlds. Most customers don’t know they can control their home with their smartphone, or they don’t know they can connect their car to the mobile internet with their smartphone. And that’s where AT comes in. Cars are going to be smartphones on wheels.

We have recognized this opportunity for years. Consumers need help to understand the benefits.

Ad Age: These new markets, particularly connected cars,

involve several partnerships. Will you be doing more cobranded marketing?

Mr. Christopher: We’ll see. We’ve done a lot of things to put ourselves in a good position. We’re working with GM, Audi, Subaru, Tesla and others. Even before that, we put the pricing platform in place to really make the user experience easy. You can add a car to your account for $10. And it is a great, easy experience.

If you go into our stores, we just changed the messaging to: “the smartphone is the _____ to your life.” We’re seeding that idea that the smartphone is much bigger than just the device itself. That’s where we’re starting, and we’re going to start storytelling around this to communicate all of these benefits in 2015. We’ll go from there. It’s still a nascent market.

Ad Age: What’s your approach to digital marketing? And how do you leverage “big data” for it?

Mr. Christopher: Digital is multimodal: It’s everything from search to display to direct digital, which is quickly supplanting direct mail as a super exciting way to reach customers. Data drives that. We’ve spent a lot of time over the past few years over advanced analytical capabilities, so that we can be highly relevant, highly direct. And we’re only going to grow those capabilities. That’s going to get more of our advertising dollars.

We’re not afraid to experiment. I look at all of these things as experiments. Some of them are going to cross over into mass marketing; some of them won’t. We’re constantly pushing ourselves to where our customers are. We have to be there.

Ad Age: You’ve been investing in your own digital properties the majority stake in Fullscreen [a YouTube network]; and your CEO has hinted at using an over the top service with DirecTV. Will they be a bigger part of your digital budgets?

Mr. Christopher: Our consumers want video. They want relevant content when they want it. If some new platform emerges, we’re going to be on that platform. Past new mediums that are now mainstream they deserve a significant part of marketing mix.

Mr. Christopher: We want to play our game. We have an extremely strong value proposition, across a great network, great value and that is changing to where the future is going, on home, on cars. We are aggressively moving to where the customers are going to be. Some others are one dimensional. We’re playing our game, and we’re excited about the potential.
